About MoonCalc
MoonCalc is a free collection of moon phase calculators and lunar tools for astronomy enthusiasts, gardeners, photographers, and anyone curious about the Moon. All results are instant and require no sign-up. Whether you want to know tonight's moon phase or find the next supermoon, MoonCalc gives you the answer in seconds.
Our Mission
We believe lunar calculations should be simple and accessible to everyone. The Moon influences tides, gardening schedules, wildlife behavior, and cultural traditions around the world — yet most people have no easy way to look up precise lunar data for a specific date and location. MoonCalc fills that gap with a suite of free, privacy-friendly tools that anyone can use without creating an account or downloading an app.
What We Offer
- Moon Phase Calculator: Find the exact phase, illumination percentage, and phase name for any date you choose.
- Current Moon Phase: See tonight's phase with live illumination data updated in real time.
- Lunar Calendar: Browse a full month view showing the phase icon for every day — useful for planning photography shoots, garden planting, or fishing trips.
- Next Full Moon & New Moon Finders: Instantly find the date and time of the next full or new moon from today.
- Supermoon, Blue Moon & Eclipse Predictors: Look up upcoming rare lunar events including supermoons, blue moons, and lunar eclipses.
- Moon Distance, Moon Sign & Moonrise Estimators: Get the Moon's current distance from Earth, its zodiac sign, and estimated rise and set times for your location.
How the Tools Work
MoonCalc uses established lunar algorithms — including the Jean Meeus astronomical calculation methods — to compute moon phases and positions. All calculations run directly in your browser using JavaScript. No data is sent to any server, and the tools function offline after the initial page load. Location-based features use your browser's geolocation API only when you grant permission; we never store location data.
Who Uses MoonCalc
MoonCalc is used by astrophotographers planning shoots around the new moon for dark skies, gardeners following lunar planting calendars, anglers checking moon phase fishing guides, educators teaching astronomy, and curious individuals who simply want to know what the Moon is doing tonight. Cultural and religious users also find our lunar calendar useful for traditions tied to the lunar cycle.
Accuracy
Our phase calculations are accurate to within a few minutes for dates within several decades of the present. For historical dates or dates far in the future, small errors may accumulate due to the complexity of the Moon's orbital mechanics. For critical astronomical work, we recommend cross-referencing with professional ephemeris software.
